Thailand Raptor Migration & Southern Forests
THE JOURNEY
A closer look.
Watch the skies over southern Thailand as migrating birds of prey move along the peninsula. This seven-day journey combines repeated visits to Khao Dinsor with coastal birding and the evergreen forests of Krung Ching.
Returning to the migration watchpoint on different days allows you to experience changes in species and numbers, while forest sessions add a contrasting dimension to the trip. Your guide will adjust stops to migration conditions and your target list.
Journey highlights
- Raptor watching at Khao Dinsor across several days
- Coastal birding around Chumphon
- Evergreen forest exploration at Krung Ching
- Opportunities to study identification and flight behaviour
- A route beginning and ending in Bangkok
YOUR TIME IN THE FIELD
The itinerary.
Day 120 October 2027: Bangkok to Chumphon
Arrive in Bangkok on 19 October and be ready for collection from your hotel the following morning. Travel south towards Chumphon, with a morning birding stop selected around your interests and available time. The main drive takes approximately six hours.
Day 221 October 2027: Khao Dinsor
Spend the day watching raptor migration at Khao Dinsor. If conditions allow, visit a coastal site such as Phanang Tak Bay later in the day to look for shorebirds, including Malaysian Plover.
Day 322 October 2027: Chumphon to Krung Ching
Bird at Nong Yai or another suitable site before continuing south to Krung Ching. Allow approximately five hours for the drive. An afternoon visit to Chet’s hide is planned, subject to access and availability.
Day 423 October 2027: Krung Ching forest
Spend a full day exploring Krung Ching’s evergreen forest. Work with your guide to locate forest birds by sight and sound, allowing time for patient observation and photography.
Day 524 October 2027: Return to Chumphon
Enjoy a morning forest session at Krung Ching, or bird at a suitable stop along the return route. Travel north to Chumphon for the next stage of migration watching.
Day 625 October 2027: A second perspective on migration
Return to Khao Dinsor for another full day. Migration varies from day to day, and the balance of Grey-faced Buzzards, Black Bazas and other species may differ from the earlier visit.
Day 726 October 2027: Final watch and Bangkok
Spend the morning at Khao Dinsor before driving back to Bangkok. Arrange onward flights with sufficient time for the road journey and any traffic delays.
